How to publish a website from a ZIP file

Website templates, course projects and design tools often hand you a ZIP file. You do not need to unpack it or understand what is inside. Drop the ZIP into SiteUp and it figures out the structure for you. Here is what happens behind the scenes, and what to do when something does not fit.

Step by step

  1. Find the ZIP

Locate the .zip file in your Downloads folder or wherever you saved it.

  2. Drop it into SiteUp

Open siteup.fyi and drag the ZIP onto the drop area, or press Folder or ZIP and choose the file.

  3. Pick the home page if asked

If the ZIP contains several HTML pages and none is called index.html, choose which page should open first.

  4. Check and publish

Look at the file count and home page in the summary, then press Publish.

How SiteUp reads your ZIP

  • Wrapping folder. Many ZIPs contain a single folder with the site inside. SiteUp opens that folder for you, so my-site/index.html becomes the home page.
  • System files. Hidden files such as .DS_Store, __MACOSX and Thumbs.db are skipped automatically.
  • Home page. If there is an index.html at the top, it opens first. If there is only one HTML page, it becomes the home page. If there are several, you choose.

Making a ZIP yourself

If you have a folder rather than a ZIP, you can drop the folder directly. If you would like a ZIP anyway:

  • Windows: right click the folder, then choose Send to and Compressed (zipped) folder, or Compress to ZIP file.
  • Mac: right click the folder and choose Compress.
  • Android: in the Files app, select the files, open the menu and choose Compress.

Troubleshooting

  • “No HTML page found.” The ZIP holds only assets, or the HTML is inside another ZIP. Unpack it and check that a page is there.
  • A file name is not allowed. Names with letters like ç, ğ, ş or symbols like # cannot be used on the web reliably. Rename them with plain letters and update the references in your HTML.
  • “This ZIP file could not be opened.” It may be password protected or damaged. Create the ZIP again without a password.
  • Too large. The limit is 50 MB for the whole site. Compress large images and keep videos short, or host long videos elsewhere.

Common questions

Can I upload a WordPress export?

Only if it is a static export of HTML files. WordPress itself needs PHP and a database, which SiteUp does not run.

Do links between my pages keep working?

Yes. Relative links like about.html or ../css/style.css keep working, because the folder structure is kept as it is.

Which file types are allowed?

Web pages, styles, scripts, images, audio, video, fonts, PDFs, 3D models and subtitles. Executables and archives inside the site are not allowed.
